Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

I’m Dr Emily Mills, Clinical Psychologist and founder of Empowerment Psychology.
Since 2008, I’ve dedicated my career to helping people reconnect with their inner strength and rediscover the parts of themselves that have been silenced by trauma, stress, or self-doubt. My practice is built on the belief that healing isn’t about fixing what’s “broken,” but rather coming home to the wholeness that’s already within you.
Over the past sixteen years, I’ve worked across community mental-health and private practice settings with children, adolescents, and adults. My therapeutic approach blends evidence-based methods with a deep respect for the mind–body–spirit connection that underpins lasting change.
I’m a Level 2 Internal Family Systems (IFS) trained practitioner, integrating IFS with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other trauma-informed modalities. Through this work, I help clients build compassionate relationships with their inner world—learning to listen to, rather than battle against, the parts that have been trying to keep them safe.
I hold a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) from James Cook University, and an undergraduate degree from Griffith University. I’m a fully registered and clinically endorsed psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, and an advocate for accessible, high-quality care across rural and regional Queensland.

Telehealth Services
We believe that help should be accessible to all. That is why we offer our services through telehealth, by phone or videoconferencing. Speak to us today about arranging a telehealth consultation.
What To Expect

Once you have decided to seek help and we have received your referral, either from your GP or other source my admin will contact you to make an intake appointment.

At the intake appointment your psychologist will ask you lots of questions to find out what is going on and to formulate a treatment plan.

At the end of the session a treatment plan will be agreed upon. It is important to remember that you are the best person to know what feels right for you and if the treatment sounds like a good fit.

After the intake appointment the next appointment will start the therapy process. Sessions are typically 50 minute sessions. This will typically involve a check in to see any issues that have arisen since last session. Your psychologist will teach you skills and support you to achieve your mental health goals identified above.
